Hubcap

Local Students Involved in the Water Project

Earlier this month, I reported on the World Water Monitoring Project on this blog. I received a phone call from Vena Jones of the Cumberland River Compact yesterday to help publicize this great project locally. Here are some highlights from their press release:

Schools in the Middle Tennessee area are partnering with the Cumberland River Compact, Metro Water, and the Middle Tennessee Stormwater Coalition to collect water quality data on streams in their area. Students will report the information on the Cumberland River Compact website and also contribute their information to the international database.

Students are leading the efforts to protect their local environment. Living in a world shrunken by technology, they have a better understanding of the interdependence of important natural resources in a larger, global setting.

Since 2002, many youth have demonstrated their growing knowledge while participating in World Water Monitoring Day
(WWMD). WWMD presents an important opportunity for young people to become involved in safeguarding natural resources on a local, national and international scale. Students around the world from Argentina to Zimbabwe tested their local waterways for four basic indicators of

Cleaning the Creek?

BroomInCreek_1864Creek clean ups are one of my favorite activities. Keeping the water supply clean is important to me.

But Beech Creek in my neighborhood does not need cleaning with a broom. Why is there a broom in the creek?

Watch Those Ford Drivers in the UK

This is interesting news from Trak.in News:

London, October 5 (ANI): People behind the wheels of Ford are most likely to throw litter from their vehicles in the UK, suggests a survey.

Keep Britain Tidy found over 1,000 instances of people, especially those in the South East, creating litter from a Ford followed by just over 300 sightings from a BMW.

Phil Barton, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy, thinks that littering from a car should be treated as a motoring offence.

“Car littering is disgusting, detrimental to the environment and dangerous,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“Through campaigning on this issue, we now have information that is valuable and important to our goal of influencing the law makers and the manufacturers to make a positive change towards ending this problem,” he added. (ANI)

Litter I Like to Find

Quarters_1868I have always found money lying in the street, on the sidewalk, in the parking garage and many other places.

This is the kind of litter I like to find, especially when the owner is  not in sight. Ha!

I return billfolds intact. Loose change is up for grabs. During the past week, I have found 3 quarters. No, it’s not much, except when you are unemployed as I am.

The Global Classroom Project (Measuring Rainfall)

Engum_schoolChildren from more than 15 countries are participating in a Danish research experiment.

Danfoss Universe launched a homepage with the results from a experiment involving measuring rainfall. During the last couple of days more than 2000 children from more than 15 countries and 50 schools have helped to conduct the research work. The children have monitored and measured the rainfall and will continue this throughout next week. The aim is to make children aware of the watercycle, curious about science and help them understand the environmental issues linked to the water cycle and the rainfall.

The registration is open so schools all over the world can join.

Read mora about the project at The Global Classroom Project at http://www.tgcproject.org.

I think it is a good project to involve children from all over the world in the same environmental project.

Bellevue Clean Up Scheduled

From the morning newspaper:

Bellevue gears up for annual cleanup
October 4, 2009
–>An annual Bellevue cleanup will offer chances to toss out old furniture, shred documents and dispose of old electronics — as well as get your vehicle’s emissions test and renew license plates.

As well, volunteers will collect trash from the community’s main streets with assistance from community service workers.

The cleanup is 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 24 in the parking lot at Bellevue Center between the Sears store and former Macy’s store. It is sponsored by the Bellevue Exchange Club.

Here are the opportunities available:

Metro Nashville Public Works will provide roll-off bins for disposal of bulk items, no tree limbs or hazardous waste allowed.

Knighthorst Shredding will provide shredding of confidential papers, a limit of two boxes.

Goodwill Industries will be accepting gently-used items.

Creative Recycling Systems will accept computers, monitors, telephones and cell phones, printers and copiers, TV and stereo equipment, and calculators. Visit www.crserecycling.com for a complete list of accepted items.

Trim Trees Wisely

Tree_1045Yesterday I was at my commission sales contract job when I heard the sounds of a tree being butchered. I was unaware that there was a large tree in the area, as it sits on the Dolly Parton compound on 12South.

At lunch the tree had become one large stick about 20 feet in the air. It had been stripped clean of branches and limbs.

Earlier in the day at a Tennessee Women in Green meeting, I had been given a brochure on the proper trimming of trees. Here is a link to the proper way to prune trees.

Plant a Tree on Your Car!

8135_1048559233174_1801516146_106293_4215792_nThe Tennessee Urban Forestry Council needs 1000 interested Tennesseans to sign up for this tree license plate.

According to the council director Jennifer Smith, trees make a difference in our lives.

How?

  • Trees absorb noise.
  • Trees cool urban areas.
  • Trees replenish the water table.
  • Trees slow water runoff.
  • Trees lower energy costs.
  • Trees provide wildlife habitats.
  • Trees improve air quality.
  • Trees are good for our health.
  • Trees filter particulate pollution which leads to asthma and other breathing problems.
  • Trees prevent soil erosion.

Go to http://www.TennesseeTrees.org to sign up for this attractive plate which will benefit urban trees.

Plastic Bottles in Trash Illegal in North Carolina Tomorrow

This is great news. I wish every state and country would do this:

By KEN MURCHISON

Starting Thursday, it will be illegal to put plastic soda or water bottles in the trash in North Carolina.

Beginning Oct. 1, all plastic bottles must be recycled. The state is also banning oil filters and wooden pallets from landfills.

North Carolina recovers less than one out of every five plastic bottles generated in the state, despite having some of the largest processors of the bottles.

The new ban is intended to boost the recovery of bottles, in large part to meet the growing demand for the materials.

“Widespread compliance with the plastic bottle disposal ban will ensure a flow of plastic bottles to meet market demand for the materials and will result in additional job creation through the expansion of recycling collection companies,” said Scott Mouw, environmental supervisor for the state Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance.”

The Town of Spring Hope is asking residents to make as better effort of recycling plastic bottles. Residents who do not have recycling bins should call the town at 478-5186 to request
