Recycling Equals Money for Wedding

Can_0955I love this story from the Digital Journal:

Andrea Parrish, 25, and Peter Geyer, 29, have amassed 18,000 aluminum cans so far. Their ultimate goal is to collect 400,000 containers, which they estimate will weigh around five tons and can be redeemed for about $3,800. The pair is enlisting the help of family, friends and even total strangers to help them in their cause, and have set up a Web site giving all particulars on when and where donations of aluminum cans can be made. In commenting on this slightly quirky way of raising wedding funds, Parrish said:

“My parents have always thought I was nuts.”

While Geyer said a couple of the bags that have already filled half their living room contain about a thousand hangovers’ worth of crushed Busch Light beer cans and were contributed by a friend. The couple hopes to meet their goal by July 31, the date of their wedding.

More Gloves

Glove_1932During my litter walks, I find lots of gloves. Usually just one glove lying alone in the road.

I think they blow out of work trucks, as most of the gloves are work gloves.

News from Tennessee Environmental Council

The Tennessee Environmental Council reports:

Council Tree Planting Project
Spring Hill – January 16 – 9am-1pm

Did you know that silt and sediment from erosion accounts for 80% of water pollution in our Tennessee streams?  If you are looking for an opportunity to make a real difference for the health of our waterways, please join us on Saturday.  We be planting trees which stabilize the soil and help improve water quality.

Meet us at Jerry Erwin Park at 9 am.  Please bring gloves, wear work boots and bring water to drink. We will meet at the gate at 9 am and work until about 1 pm.

We will also be giving trees away as part of the Tennessee Tree Project.  The Council requests a $3/tree donation for seedlings and a $15/tree donation for the 2-3 year old trees to help continue this project.  Because of the generosity of CareAll, anyone who donates for 3 tree ($9) get two extra – 5 trees for the price of 3!

Directions:
From Nashville – take I65 to Saturn parkway, take Saturn parkway to Kedron road exit, go right – Jerry

Blooming Storm Drain

Magnolia_1931Putting anything into a storm drain is illegal. Anyway, I chuckled when I saw this branch stuck in the top of storm drain.

Santa Head

Santa_1933This Santa head was on a string of Santa heads that adorned a neighbor’s mail box in my neighborhood. Unfortunately one was left behind when the string was removed.

I spent most of Christmas week preventing the dog that I was pet sitting from peeing on the Santa decorations.

Nothing is sadder than left behind Christmas decorations.

Some Irish Towns Have Been Declared “Litter-Free”

This news from Irish Times is encouraging:

THE MAJORITY of towns in the Republic are now “litter-free” by normal European standards, environmental group Irish Business Against Litter (Ibal) will announce today.

The group, which published its final 2009 litter league tables yesterday, said that while towns and villages are getting cleaner, cities are getting dirtier.

According to the league tables almost two-thirds of the 60 towns surveyed were classed as “litter-free”, while the majority of the cities were classed as “littered”.

How many U.S. towns are litter-free?

Electronics Recycling in Nashville

Jenny Upchurch in the Tennessean this morning reminds us where to recycle electronics in Nashville.

Some Fair and Balanced News

D.C. is now BYOB (bring your own bag) in this news report from FOX News.

Electronics Recycling

Here is a story from MSNBC about litter on Federal lands.

SKULL VALLEY, Utah – During a warm spell this fall, vandals hauled 18 decrepit televisions and computers down a narrow gravel road in Utah’s picturesque Skull Valley, dumped them on a hillside, blasted them with guns and left them for dead.

Trash on any land is disgusting. Last week, when I returned from visiting a client, I saw a large item on the side of McCrory Lane. The item was a television set and sat right on the side of the road. A car could have easily hit the old tube TV and wrecked.

When the Party’s Over

Ball_1929This forsaken Christmas tree ball was sitting in a pile of leaves on the side of my street. After photographing it, I disposed of it properly.

When the party is over, please clean up the mess.

And Happy New Year! I promise to post regularly again in the new year. It’s a resolution.
